A family trip works best when the plan starts with sleep, meals and mobility. A terrace photograph will not tell you whether a room has steep access, whether a cot is available or how early breakfast starts. Choose one main outing each day and leave a reliable place to rest between activities.

Choose the room and base carefully

Ask for the exact room's access route, stair count, bed setup and heating or cooling. A cave-style property may have uneven floors or multiple levels. Request clear photographs of the access and sleeping arrangement, rather than relying on a property-wide gallery.

A central base can reduce repeated vehicle journeys, but a quiet room and dependable food options may matter more than being beside the busiest street. Confirm family pickup arrangements with each provider.

Match the activity to the child

Balloon operators and booking options have their own age, height and participation restrictions; there is no universal family eligibility promise. Tell the actual provider your children's ages before purchasing. For underground cities, discuss narrow passages, stairs and the possibility of turning back.

A pottery session can be a gentler alternative if the host accepts children and explains supervision. A museum outing can be shortened by choosing a small number of stops rather than requiring the family to see every interior.

      Build a workable daily rhythm

Start outdoor outings earlier in hot weather, carry water and food you know the children will eat, and leave the afternoon adaptable. Keep a change of clothes and a warmer layer in the day bag instead of in luggage back at the hotel.

For airport transport, request a suitable child seat in writing and give the flight number, passenger count and luggage details. Never assume a shared shuttle includes a specific seat arrangement or accommodates an unmentioned pushchair.

        Before you go

Use this checklist to resolve the details that can change your day. Save the written confirmations alongside your hotel address so a last-minute change does not mean starting the research again.

        • Written age/height approval for restricted activities
        • Room-access photographs reviewed
        • Child-seat request acknowledged
        • Short outdoor route plus indoor alternative planned

        Reader questions

Can I take a stroller into underground cities?

Do not assume that narrow passages and stairs are stroller-accessible. Ask the official venue and provider about the intended route; plan an alternative if carrying your child is not suitable.
